VOICE Musical Theater

VOICE Charter School founded the after-school musical theater program during the 2015-2016 academic year after being awared the Shubert Foundation/MTI Broadway Junior Grant. The program has provided students with the change to shift their focus from developing as an ensemble member in the choral program to building individualized skills in acting, dancing, and solo singing.

The program’s inaugural production of Once On This Island, JR. in May 2016 delighted audiences in both evening performances and in-school performances that gave younger VOICE students a chance to see their schoolmates shine. Since then, a cast of approximately twenty-five students in grades six through eight have worked on productions of Into the Woods, JR. and most recently, Willy Wonka, JR.

VOICE’s theater program not only offers opportunities for students to perform on stage, but also has a division for working behind the scenes. Students manage props and costumes and also assist in running the lights for the performances. The program directors are excited to continue expanding the possibilities for students to take ownership over this annual production experience.
