Our STEAM after-school program covers areas in science, technology, engineering, art, and math. Students engage with a variety of topics each semester. During one semester, for example, middle school students worked with the MIT-developed design software, Scratch, which allows students to learn coding, while also gaining experience in animation and design.
Students have also worked on a Hero's Journey project which connects well to the 6th grade ELA curriculum. They have created their own character and put it through various challenges to experience different kinds and levels of coding. Students have worked both individually and collaboratively to create these projects. Going through a design cycle of researching, imagining, designing, prototyping and finally play testing, students have acquired real life engineering skills that are used in the workforce.
